Nature or Industry?
When it comes to nature and industrial development, I think the issue will also be there as long as we are trying to expose the pollutants or toxins into the air, water and land. I’m not a naturalist, but I don’t agree on killing ourselves and mother earth slowly too by achieving great social economic development.
Recently, BP has received some negative remarks when the state government allowed them to release more ammonia and sludge into Lake Michigan from its refinery. Since we can’t do without the refinery process, if BP is treating the water and releasing 99.9% of pure H2O, then the sludge will never be discharged into the lake. I think as long as the water test is showing a positive result, that the water treatment is fairly effective.
On top of that, the level of the ammonia discharge will also be monitored. If BP does not exceed the level predefined by the federal environmental guidelines, then it should not be a concern. Of course, everyone hopes that it’s best not to dump anything ammonia in the water, but is that possible? In terms of industrial process, I don’t think so. But I’m not saying that we should sacrifice the living things in the lake as well. As long as BP is following the state and federal laws, regulations,
and guidelines in protecting the aquatic livings and human life, and implementing continuous improvement for the environment, that should be alright to me.
I’m living in a developing country, and we have more dead rivers and lakes here comparing to western countries. But it’s too bad that we do not have many organization that takes the effort as much as BP.
